Qatar Vehicle Safety Systems: Volvo and Next-Generation Solutions As part of its 2030 National Vision, Qatar aims to build a transportation system that prioritizes human life, not just economic and urban development. To achieve this goal, significant importance is placed on safety systems integrated into vehicles to reduce traffic fatalities and enhance driver and passenger safety. Volvo, in particular, has become one of Qatar's most reliable automotive partners with its technological leadership in this field and its "human-centered safety" philosophy. The country experiences tens of thousands of traffic accidents each year. A significant portion of these accidents are due to preventable causes such as excessive speed, inattention, and fatigue. Therefore, Qatar is addressing this problem not only through infrastructure and legal regulations but also through in-car intelligent safety technologies. Volvo's systems are at the heart of this strategy. Volvo has been developing groundbreaking safety innovations for years, with the goal of "ensuring no one dies in a Volvo." This approach is also gaining significant traction in the Qatari market. The City Safety™ system, which automatically brakes in urban traffic and detects pedestrians and cyclists, is particularly vital in dense cities like Doha. On highways, semi-autonomous driving technologies like Pilot Assist reduce long-distance fatigue and increase both comfort and safety. The Volvo EX90, which entered the Qatar market in 2024, is not only an electric SUV but also stands out as the “world’s safest vehicle.” This vehicle features an interior cabin camera that constantly monitors the driver’s attention. It detects driver distractions, especially after iftar hours or late at night, and tries to prevent accidents by issuing warnings. Furthermore, thanks to sensor protection systems specifically developed for Qatar’s desert climate, the cameras and LIDAR systems operate uninterruptedly even during sandstorms. Volvo also integrates with Qatar’s smart transportation infrastructure. Models like the EX90 can communicate with traffic lights and road signs. It automatically detects speed limits and can provide autonomous navigation to the nearest hospital in emergencies. This integration works in harmony with the "Intelligent Transport System," implemented as part of Qatar's "smart city" infrastructure. Public institutions also support this safety. The Ministry of Interior prefers Volvo models for its police and emergency service vehicles. These vehicles share real-time data in the event of an accident, allowing rescue teams to respond more quickly. Hamad International Airport aims to offer guests both luxury and maximum safety by using models like the Volvo EX90 and S90 Hybrid for its VIP transfer services. Collaborations continue in research and development. The Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC) has launched a project called "Safe Roads Qatar" with Volvo. This project involves developing artificial intelligence-based accident prediction systems. Driver behavior is analyzed to calculate risk scores, and this data, integrated into fleet management systems, provides driver safety reports to corporate customers. Rival brands are also trying to keep pace with Volvo's leadership. Mercedes-Benz's PRE-SAFE®, BMW's Driving Assistant Pro, and Tesla's autonomous driving systems remain popular in the Qatar market. However, Volvo is one step ahead of its competitors, both with its technological depth and its climate and infrastructure integrations specifically tailored to Qatar. Qatar has clear goals for the coming years: advanced driver assistance systems will be mandatory in all new trucks and service vehicles starting in 2025, autonomous emergency vehicles will be tested in 2026, and basic safety systems like City Safety™ will be standard in all newly sold vehicles by 2028. By 2030, the target is a fifty percent reduction in traffic accidents, and Volvo is expected to directly contribute to thirty percent of this target. Ultimately, Qatar wants to be known not only for luxury and extravagance, but for a truly safe, intelligent, and humane transportation experience. In this transformation, Volvo continues to be Qatar's companion with its technology, reliability, and engineering approach sensitive to local needs. The roads of the future will be traveled not only quickly but also safely in Qatar.
